What the Zacks Rank really measures, what each paid tier costs, and whether Zacks Premium is worth it for long-term investors.
Is Zacks worth it? Zacks Premium is worth $249 a year (as of September 2026) if you trade on earnings momentum and want quantitative screens. For long-term investors it is a weaker fit. The Zacks Rank is built on analyst estimate revisions and, by Zacks' own description, targets the next one to three months.
Disclosure: We make Stock Simplifier, a stock research tool that competes with Zacks. Full disclosure
Great for: active investors who want a quantitative, earnings-revision signal on thousands of stocks and a library of ready-made screens.
Skip it if: you buy businesses to hold for years. The Zacks Rank and Style Scores are built to predict the next one to three months.
Price vs value: Premium at $249 a year with a 30-day free trial is fair value for that job. The $2,995 Ultimate bundle is only for dedicated traders.
Zacks Investment Research is a Chicago-based research firm. Its whole system grows from one idea its founder, Len Zacks, developed in the late 1970s: earnings estimate revisions are the most powerful force moving stock prices. When Wall Street analysts raise their profit forecasts for a company, the stock tends to follow. When they cut them, it tends to lag.
The Zacks Rank turns that idea into a single number from #1 (Strong Buy) to #5 (Strong Sell). Zacks says the Rank is built from four factors tied to earnings estimates, which it calls Agreement, Magnitude, Upside and Surprise. The #1 list is the top 5% of ranked stocks. On a typical day that is over 200 Strong Buys, plus around 600 stocks at #2.
Zacks publishes a long track record for the Rank. It says #1 Strong Buy stocks have averaged a gain of +23.80% a year from January 1, 1988 through August 3, 2026, more than double the S&P 500. Read the fine print before leaning on that number. It is a hypothetical, equally weighted portfolio rebalanced monthly, exclusive of fees, with some stocks excluded from the calculation. Nobody could have earned exactly that return in practice, and turning over a portfolio every month would add trading costs and, in a taxable account, taxes.
The Style Scores sit alongside the Rank. Every covered stock gets a letter grade from A to F for Value, Growth and Momentum, plus a combined VGM score. Zacks says it designed them to help pick the best Rank stocks and optimized them for the same one-to-three-month window as the Rank.
Earnings ESP (Expected Surprise Prediction) compares the most accurate recent estimate to the consensus to flag companies likely to beat or miss. Zacks says that a Rank of #3 or better combined with a positive ESP produced a positive surprise 70% of the time in its 10-year backtest.

Zacks Premium adds the tools most people mean when they say "Zacks":
Zacks Investor Collection bundles Premium with Zacks' long-term recommendation services, including Value Investor, Income Investor, Home Run Investor, ETF Investor, Top 10 Stocks and Stocks Under $10, with real-time buy and sell alerts.
Zacks Ultimate adds everything: all long-term services plus Zacks' shorter-term trading services, such as Insider Trader, Surprise Trader, Options Trader and the Short Sell List, and the thematic Innovators portfolios.
Prices are from Zacks' own services page as of September 2026.
| Plan | Price | Trial | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free membership | $0 | n/a | Zacks Rank on individual stocks, portfolio tracker with email alerts, daily newsletter |
| Zacks Premium | $249/yr | 30 days free | Full #1 Rank List, research reports on 1,000+ stocks, 45+ Premium Screens, Earnings ESP Filter, Focus List |

| Zacks Ultimate | $299/mo or $2,995/yr | 30 days for $1 | Everything, including all trading services |
Individual services can also be bought on their own. Long-term services such as Value Investor list at $299 a year, and most trading services list at $995 a year. Zacks' terms say Ultimate trials are limited to three per customer, and a fourth trial converts into a $299 monthly subscription. The terms also describe a 90-day unconditional refund on Zacks Ultimate Lifetime. For other plans, check the refund terms at checkout before you pay.
The core idea has real support. Estimate revisions do carry information about near-term price moves. The Rank packages that signal cleanly for thousands of stocks, and Zacks has published a long record of how it has performed.
Premium is a lot of tool for $249. Over 45 ready-made screens, research reports on more than 1,000 stocks and the full Rank list is a deep toolkit, and the 30-day free trial lets you test it properly.
Consistency. A quantitative model never has an off day or falls in love with a stock. Every company is measured the same way, every day.
Earnings ESP is distinctive. If you trade around earnings season, a tool built specifically to predict surprises is hard to find elsewhere.
The free tier is useful. Seeing a stock's Rank and getting alerts when it changes costs nothing.
It answers a short-term question. Zacks is upfront that the Rank and Style Scores target the next one to three months. If your time horizon is five years, a signal built for next quarter is measuring something other than what you care about. A great business can be a #4 Sell for a few months after a soft guide.
It says little about business quality. The Rank does not assess a company's moat, management or capital allocation. It tracks what analysts expect next, and that says more about sentiment than about how durable the business is.
Ranks churn. Because the inputs change daily, ranks move often. Following them closely pushes you toward frequent trading, which works against buy-and-hold investing and adds costs.
The headline return needs context. The +23.80% a year figure is a hypothetical, fee-free, monthly-rebalanced calculation. It is useful evidence that the signal has worked historically. It is not a return a subscriber should expect.
The site is busy and the upsells are constant. Zacks.com is dense, with many services, promotions and $1 trials competing for your attention. The jump from $249 Premium to $2,995 Ultimate is steep, and the product lineup takes time to untangle.
US-focused. Coverage centers on US stocks, mutual funds and ETFs.
| Research quality | A real, documented quant signal plus analyst reports, but thin on business analysis. | 3.5/5 |
| Ease of use | The Rank is simple; the site and product lineup are cluttered. | 2.5/5 |
| Value for money | Premium is fair at $249 with a free trial; the upper tiers are expensive. | 3.5/5 |
| Helps you build your own conviction | Hands you a short-term score, which is hard to hold onto when a stock falls. | 2/5 |
| Coverage | Broad across US stocks, funds and ETFs; little outside the US. | 3.5/5 |
| Overall | A strong tool for momentum investors, and a mismatch for most buy-and-hold investors. | 3.0/5 |

For screening and data, Stock Rover, GuruFocus, Koyfin and TIKR let you set your own criteria. Simply Wall St is the visual, beginner-friendly option.
Zacks vs Stock Simplifier. We make Stock Simplifier, so weigh this accordingly. The two tools answer different questions. Zacks asks what analysts' earnings expectations are doing right now. Stock Simplifier asks what the business is: its model, lifecycle phase, moat, management, growth, risks and valuation, including a reverse DCF on the Pro plan. It walks you through each step with real Fiscal.ai data and has you score it yourself. It does not track estimate revisions, predict earnings surprises or give you a sortable 1 to 5 rank, so if that is your strategy, Zacks is the better tool. Our Standard plan is $199 a year and there is a free plan. More detail on our Stock Simplifier vs Zacks page, and more options in our Zacks alternatives guide.
Looking for a tool that fits your investing style? Zacks is not ranked in our investing-style guides, but those guides rank the best research tools for long-term investors, dividend investors, value investors and growth investors.
Zacks has built a disciplined, well-documented system around a real market signal, and Premium is a reasonable price for it. The catch is the time frame. The Zacks Rank tells you what analysts expect over the next few months. If you intend to own a company for years, use Zacks as one input at most, and do the work of understanding the business yourself.

For investors who trade on earnings momentum, yes: $249 a year buys the full Zacks #1 Rank List, 45+ screens and research reports on 1,000+ stocks, with a 30-day free trial. For long-term investors it is harder to justify, because the Rank targets the next one to three months.
As of September 2026: a free membership, Zacks Premium at $249 a year, Zacks Investor Collection at $59 a month or $495 a year, and Zacks Ultimate at $299 a month or $2,995 a year. Individual services are also sold separately.
Zacks reports that #1 Strong Buy stocks averaged +23.80% a year from 1988 through August 2026. That figure comes from a hypothetical, equally weighted, monthly-rebalanced portfolio that excludes fees. The underlying signal is real, but you should not expect to earn that return yourself.
Zacks Premium has a 30-day free trial. Investor Collection and Ultimate offer 30 days of access for $1. Zacks' terms describe a 90-day unconditional refund on Zacks Ultimate Lifetime; check the refund terms for other plans at checkout.
Letter grades from A to F for Value, Growth and Momentum, plus a combined VGM score. Zacks designed them to help choose among top-ranked stocks, optimized for the same one-to-three-month window as the Zacks Rank.
